Is Graphene better than Ceramic coating?

You might have heard a great deal of buzz surrounding graphene and its relatively new application as a paint protection coating for cars and other vehicles. While its application in the automotive industry is fairly new, graphene itself as a material was founded many decades ago. It was first discovered in the University of Manchester, UK. In today’s blog, we’re going to be talking about graphene coatings, how they compare to ceramic coatings, and everything else you need to know about this interesting substance.

Graphene Vs. Ceramic Coating

In the world of paint protection, ceramic coatings have long been regarded as among the best forms of protection one can give a vehicle. While Graphene Coating has stronger physical properties, ceramic coatings also deliver a good degree of physical protection while also enhancing the natural look of the car.

Water Spotting

So how about graphene coatings? First of all, it should be said that both ceramic and graphene coatings do offer excellent levels of protection. However, we’ve observed that graphene coatings do offer marginally better protection against water spotting, in particular. If you live in an area prone to more acidic rain, then a graphene coating will serve you better.

Hardness

The hardness of ceramic and graphene coatings is measured on the “H” scale. The strongest ceramic coatings are rated at 9H, which are typically the ones that will deliver outstanding protection for 5 or more years. With graphene coatings, however, that number rises above 10H, showing that graphene is the physically more robust of the two. That means graphene also offers better scratch and chip protection.

Longevity

For this point, we’re going to be a little more tentative, but it is reasonably predicted that the lifespan of a graphene coating will be greater than that of a ceramic coating. When you consider that the strongest ceramic coatings last for 5 or more years, then that’s very good news for those getting graphene coatings.

Why so tentative?

Well, graphene as an automotive paint protection is still a new idea, so it hasn’t been officially observed as of yet. However, our almost 20 years’ of knowledge and study of graphene since 2004 tells us that graphene is lighter, and yet harder and more robust. We’ve applied it to one of our cars, too, and so far we are seeing better results than what we’d expect from ceramic coatings.

Quantity and Price

With ceramic coatings, the material has to be applied in layers in order to get a complete coating. This makes the process both more time-consuming and more expensive for buyers. Another advantage of graphene is that it can be applied more rapidly in a single layer, thus making it more affordable. For reference, graphene can be applied so lightly that just a single ounce of the material would be enough to cover an entire football field.

Protect and/or Restore

Given our experience using graphene coatings even on a used car, we can confirm that they are both an excellent protection for new cars, and a brilliant restorative measure for older cars who need a bit of life breathed back into them. On top of that, its affordability and ease of application could mean that it soon supplants ceramic and other coating options over time.
